Math enthusiasts and geeks alike have been waiting a century for tomorrow. Why? Because it’s Pi Day, 3/14/15. And if you want to get crazy about it, you can celebrate at 9:26:53 a.m. since the next numbers are 9, 2, 6, 5, and 3.

PiDayAnd according to ABC News, as befitting its reputation as an elite institution of math, science and engineering, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has announced that it will send out its acceptance letters for this year’s incoming class on Pi Day, precisely at 9:26 a.m. Oh, and it’s Einstein’s Birthday as well.

Now, how to celebrate? According to Scientific American, we can bake pies, pun intended and because of their circular nature. Pizzas also work, having the right shape, and the right first two letters as well.

You can also hit up science museums around the country.

The National Museum of Mathematics in New York City, for example, will gather people in Madison Square Park to light up a circle around the central fountain and compare its circumference with the distance across it—accompanied by free hot chocolate and pie.

OR, check out the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, Princeton University and the National Cryptologic Museum near Washington, D.C.

Happy Pi Day!

Our team was fortunate enough to experience the birth of the outsourcing industry – to help it form with the introduction of a new technology category “ASP,” to fuel its evolution and segmentation across vertical markets into BPO, product development outsourcing, near shoring and offshoring.  And as we continue to broaden and fine-tune our domain expertise, PenVine is taking on the task of helping to promote one of the most disruptive changes to outsourcing today: Robotic Process Automation.

We are pleased to announce we havRPAposte been tapped by The Institute for Robotic Process Automation (IRPA) as PR Agency of Record to help members promote industry growth through education and awareness. In addition to helping support the Institutes’ PR initiatives and upcoming inaugural Automation Innovation Conference 2014 later this month in NYC, PenVine will offer PR and AR services to members, helping RPA providers educate business leaders across vertical industries about RPA, its benefits and its impact on business.

We feel Robotic Process Automation presents a unique and positive shift in how Enterprises derive greater efficiencies and improved IT processes to stay competitive and are thrilled that the IRPA has taken the initiative to gather the brightest minds and leading players in the RPA industry to create a knowledge forum about this disruptive technology.

We are delighted to partner with IRPA to socialize, promote thought leadership, dispel myths and help educate the marketplace about the impact RPA will have in the coming years.

For startup CEOs and practitioners just entering the field of marketing, PR or industry analyst relations —  our IAR expert, Ilona Mohacsi has a few good pointers, which she made to the Bulldog Reporter this morning. Be sure to read the full article because Ilona covers many of the typical mistakes made when communicating with industry analysts. Here’s a synopsis:

getsmartOne of the more endearing qualities of the character Maxwell Smart in the recent movie remake of the 1960s “Get Smart” spy parody TV series, is his ability to appreciate the details. Whether it’s knowing the customs of a country or the personal habits/attributes of everyone he deals with—good or bad, Max makes it his business to know the details and get the facts.

While larger corporations will have dedicated Industry Analyst Relations staffs, most start-ups or smaller companies ask their PR agency or marketing team members to handle Industry Analyst Relations. Like Max, PR practitioners and marketers need to get smart and pay attention to the details that matter in successful Industry Analyst Relations. Here are some basic tips to get you on your way:

1.) IAR is not PR. Industry Analyst Relations is not Public Relations. Your conversations with industry analysts are two-way conversations, not interviews.

2.) BRIEFings. Industry analyst briefings are usually 30 minutes—hard stop, really. Plan your conversations with analysts accordingly, and keep your agenda tight and explain this to your executives. An analyst’s time is money.

3.) Relationship Building. As in any relationship, it is important to understand where the analyst is coming from. How is your presentation helping her or him better understand the customer need your product meets? Does she/he have a report coming up on a subject that your company can help with? Do you have customer references you can provide them?

Reflecting on the Holidays

wollman_rink

We hope everyone’s had a moment to review this Holiday’s amazing “firsts.” Because this Holiday season’s going down in the books. 1.) Fandango broke the record for the highest single-day movie ticket sales on Christmas Day, 2.) there were more iOS and Android activations than any other day in history – $17.4 million to be exact – and, 3.) my daughters and I shattered our movie-watching record, enjoying four fantastic films in less than 2 weeks – Parental Guidance, Les Miserables, Monsters Inc 3D, and The Hobbit.

We hope you had a chance to relax during the Holidays because like us, you’ll probably be hitting the ground running  this week – in our case – prepping for CES and NRF’s Big Show and Shop.org’s First LookMobile Marketer’s Mobile First Look and Mobile World Congress.

mwc

As usual, Q1 is a chock-full-of activity, announcing new wins and innovations across marketing, technology, energy and mobile. And since it’s still a big quarter for retail, you’ll probably also see us at the Internet Retailer Web Design and Usability Summit in February.

To all of our valued relationships and close friends – here’s to a fabulous 2013. May it be our best year yet!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Schenberg & the PenVine Team

So how to celebrate? If you just missed getting married at 12:12:12 on 12/12/12, then you can always try to scalp a ticket to tonight’s concert benefiting Hurricane Sandy victims at Madison Square Garden, give birth or schedule a C-section or induced delivery (in China, the number 12 and combination 12-12 is very good luck), or for certain lucky ones among us, celebrate your birthday.

While Mashable says today is not necessarily as popular as “Nerd New Year,” the nickname for last year’s 11/11/11 given it’s binary status, we think it’s pretty darn close. After all, great things come in threes – today’s date is 12/12/12, we have another perfect three at exactly 12:12:12 pm today, and again, today there are 12 days until Christmas. It’s a pretty powerful 1, 2, 3 punch!

How do you communicate? Now, how do you want to communicate? We all want personal attention – its what makes us feel special. And years ago, the first time we heard AOL’s beloved “You’ve Got Mail,” we smiled. We wanted to get personal emails.

Today we have so many emails, it’s overwhelming, yet we boast about them: “I got 50 emails this morning.” “Yeah? Well I still have 500 to get through!”

But 500 emails isn’t enough. We love our texts, Skype and Facebook messages. We’ve all pushed the envelope, demanding always-on networks to convey a story about our moods, what we had for lunch or where we’ll be this evening.

I recently saw this on Facebook and had to share, because it’s so true.

Snail Mail is Special.

Everything in life comes full-circle, again and again. And in this case, while email brings a smile, the rare but beloved snail mail might get a “YIPPIE!” So next time you think about making your audience feel special – think about what would brighten their day vs. add to their pile of daily chores. It’ll help build your relationship, leave a lasting impression and hopefully – be a conversation starter.

In today’s ever-evolving social world — where people have the power to persuade, unite and blacklist brands and products — PR has a more important role than ever. As we’ve learned from our clients (and clients’ clients), one negative post can spread like wildfire, causing a crisis that requires immediate attention. Whether it’s responding to a natural disaster or a service outage, companies not only need to be always on, but always prepared to respond and engage in conversations with their consumers. Tech support, customer service, and sales inquiries – we’ve fielded them all — directly and via online tools and social networks. And how about competitive pressures? Fully leveraging real-time social channels, engaging in conversations across time zones and cultures, when or before peers do is very important to our global clients.

Public relations is not just about media relations, it’s about spreading the word to the audiences that matter most to you — through valuable relationships with bloggers, journalists, conferences and events, analysts and directly with businesses and consumers. It’s about understanding your business and freeing up your marketing and executive teams, so they can do their jobs, while we help define strategies to drive marketing support, customer service, brand awareness and crisis communications.
